Why Christians Have A Moral Responsibility To Vote - with Dr. Everett Piper
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Election Day pressure is real, but we’re not letting polls, headlines, or cynicism steal our responsibility. We talk straight about why your vote still matters even when the media tries to “black pill” people into staying home, and why Christians cannot outsource civic engagement to someone else. If you’ve ever thought, “It’s rigged,” “My vote won’t count,” or “The candidates aren’t perfect,” this conversation meets that hesitation head-on with clarity and urgency.
We’re joined by Dr. Everett Piper to lay out the case that voting is more than a civic right. It’s a moral responsibility. He breaks down the numbers behind the Christian voting gap, explains how tens of millions of believers sit out elections, and connects the stakes to everyday realities: protecting life, defending women and children, resisting cultural indoctrination, and maintaining safe communities. We also dig into the “separation of church and state” myth, going back to Thomas Jefferson’s Danbury Baptists letter and the founding era mindset that faith belongs in the public square, not locked inside a building.
Then we bring it home with a principle that keeps us steady no matter what the returns look like tonight: duty is ours, results are God’s. That means we don’t quit if we lose, and we don’t coast if we win. We also touch on election integrity reforms and why transparent, timely results build public trust.
If this helped you think clearly, subscribe, share the episode with a friend who feels discouraged, and leave a review so more people can find it. What’s the biggest obstacle you see keeping Christians from voting?
Election Day Stakes And Urgency
Rick GreenElection day. Welcome to the WallBuilder show. This is the big day. Folks voting all over the nation. And uh hopefully you've already early voted. But if not, maybe you're standing in line waiting to go vote, listening to your favorite radio program, the WallBuilder show. But either way, uh today is the big day. Rick Green here with David Barton and Tim Barton, always taking on the hot topics of the day from a biblical, historical, and constitutional perspective. Wallbuilders.Show for any of the programs you might have missed, or if you want to share today's program as well. And then wallbuilders.com for everything else. A lot to get to. Dr. Everett Piper with us a little later in the program had a great article yesterday in the Washington Times about the moral responsibility to vote. So it's not just a civic duty, folks. As Christians, we have a moral responsibility to vote. David, Tim, it's the big day. Uh it's kind of exciting, actually. Uh uh, I'm a little bit energetic about all of this. Looking forward to doing some coverage with you guys tonight as well.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Happy election day, guys. We we made it. Um, the months on the road encouraging Christians to get engaged, encouraging pastors to activate their churches and start teaching on biblical truth with clarity. Uh, we have been encouraging
Don’t Let Polls Discourage You
SPEAKER_01and building up at this moment. So I'm I'm very excited. Um, guys, yesterday I I teased that today we might need to get into and cover. Um, there's actually two things I I want to cover today. Um, just to highlight the first of all, the fact that the New York Times did an article on November 1st, so now three days ago. Uh so is that uh I guess Sunday is when they came out. And and they were talking about the blue wave and why they might be wrong about the blue wave. Because in their polling, there were 30% more white Democrats than there were Republicans. And so it could have, it could have slanted some of their polling. And and I'm saying all of this, it's so important for everybody listening. If you have not voted yet, do not be black pilled and think that it's all hope is lost, that it's it's all rigged to scam. Don't we only need to get involved and vote and blah blah blah. Don't don't go that route. Do not be one of the 10 leaders from that that were not Joshua Caleb. Don't be one of the 10 leaders from the tribes that came back and said, guys, it doesn't matter. The giants are too big, don't do that because not only do we have a responsibility, Rick, as you're pointing out, we're about to talk to Dr. Piper about this, the the moral responsibility we have as Christians to do this. But I just want to point out a lot of the polling we have seen up to this point, there is lots of reasons to not trust it. And we know at times that polling is done as much at times to influence people as it is to honestly report where people are uh coming from or how they're viewing situations. And I say this because a lot of the election polls we have seen up to this point, there is a reason to be very critical and skeptical of the data they are giving. And all of it, I think, in many regards, was to discourage voter turnout from Christians, from conservatives, from Republicans. The reason that we've been hearing about Christian nationalism literally for a year plus is nobody talks about Islam nationalism or Marxist nationalism or communist nationalism. It's only Christian nationalism. Why? It's almost like they're trying to discourage a certain demographic from getting involved, and we can go even further because they don't discourage the Christians that believe in abortion. They don't discourage, and I'm maybe we should air quote you know Christian to that point. But but people that identify as Christians that support progressive and liberal policies, they don't discourage them from being involved. It's only Christians that have a biblical worldview. So don't be those people that get gaslighted into not showing up and voting thinking that the elections are over. No, your voice and your vote matters. And so that's just that's one article from the New York Times where they're pointing out their polling might be a little off. There's another article I want to get to, but Dad, I
How Polling Can Manipulate Turnout
SPEAKER_01know you have something to say on this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that that one with the New York Times, this is so interesting to me because they knew from the start when they started polling and they've been polling for the last several months, they knew from the start whether they were accurate or not. Everybody knows that I I don't know, whatever the numbers are. Let let's say that 37% of all Americans are white Democrats, uh whatever, then you know that that 37% is what you should have in all your polling numbers. When you take the sample, you you wait it so that 37% or whatever the you you wait for whatever it is. So, you know, if black Americans are 12% of the population, then 12% of your polls should be black Americans. And if black Americans are 10 out of 12 Democrats, then 10 out of 12 of black Americans in your polls should be Democrats. That's how you wait that to come up with it. So from the very start when they've done polls, they have known whether their polls were accurate or not. They've known whether, and Tim, as you acknowledge, they admitted, well, you know, we were off about 30% on the the white Democrats, and we over overdid it. And then rather than saying that, they waited until early voting was done, and they said, Oh, by by the way, our polling for the last several weeks has not been very accurate. We haven't done the scientific stuff. So this is like peer pressure. It's like, you know, we we tell our kids you grow up, it doesn't matter what everybody else does, you you go do the right thing. And it's like they're using polling as peer pressure. Hey, everybody else thinks that that the Republicans are gonna lose this and and the Democrats are really turning out. And it's kind of like meant to discourage, and they've been doing it for weeks and they don't tell you about it, and they've known for weeks, but they don't tell you about it until after early voting stocks. That that says a whole lot about what they think might happen.
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, and the fact that they're winning at this point and you cover their basis so that if if it turns out Democrats win, they can be like, see, this is what we told you in the polls, and if it comes back that Republicans end up winning in the Senate and maybe even maintaining the House, as incredible as that would be, it's definitely a possibility today. If that happens, they can go, Well, you know, we we kind of wondered because it was a little suspect, but but they acknowledge and said, you know, we just had a really hard time getting Republicans to want to participate in this survey. Gee, I wonder why. Because you're incredibly dishonest. All of this again, just to remind everybody out there, do not let a negative ad, a negative article, a negative poll keep you from doing your biblical duty, your civic responsibility, from your biblical stewardship to have a voice in what goes on. That you love your neighbor as yourself. Part of how you love your neighbor is you want to do things that benefit your neighbor. You want to cast your vote in a way that's gonna help those around you. There's lots of biblical connections we can make. And actually, I don't want to take this away because probably Dr. Piper is gonna make a lot of those because he makes a lot of these points in his article. So before you go further, Rick, probably we should go to Dr. Piper, but we definitely have some more to talk about and probably even highlight some more of the things from
Vote As Loving Your Neighbor
SPEAKER_01his article.
Rick GreenAll right, folks, if you have not voted yet, start heading towards your polling place right now. You can keep listening to the program as you go, but you got to get that vote in today. Whatever you're doing, if you haven't voted, stop and go. And to talk a little bit more about doing that right now. That was weird. Stop and
How To Listen And Share
Rick Greengo. Yeah, uh, hopefully you know what I meant. Uh, Dr. Hefort Piper, always good to have this guy. Man, we miss you, brother. Great to have you back. It's been way too long.
SPEAKER_03Well, Rick, it's good to join you.
Rick GreenHey, great article, by the way, saying exactly what we've been saying here on WallBuilders as well. Just the Christian duty. This isn't just a right, this isn't just something to slough off or, you know, I don't like the candidates, so I'm not going to go this time. I mean, this is this is a responsibility God put in our lap. We're wicked and slothful servants if we shirk this one.
SPEAKER_03Well, I agree, obviously. I mean, I wrote this article for the Washington Times. It was published yesterday. I titled it, Christians have a moral responsibility to vote. This is not an option. And I think logically and legally we can make that case, and we can also make the case biblically without without any equivocation. You know, Rick, you know this, and probably most of your listeners know this, that the recent Gallup polls and other polls, whether it be Barner or whatnot, they indicate that approximately 30 to 35 percent of American adults identify as born-again Christians, born-again evangelicals. And if you do the math, that comes out to about a hundred million adults. And Dr.
Rick GreenPiper, just to clarify that term, so that's not just Christians. That's we're not saying there's only 30, 35% that are Christians, you're saying evangelical Christians.
SPEAKER_03That identify as evangelical born-again Christians. No, the number would be larger if you get into, you know, just cultural Christianity and whatnot. Yeah. But so the math would Show that we've got about 100 million
Dr. Everett Piper Joins
SPEAKER_03people that identify as born-again evangelical Christians. And if you add conservative Catholics practicing Catholics to that number, you need to add another 20 million. So it's arguable that we have 120 million people, and that's a conservative estimate, 120 million voting age adults that believe in the sanctity of life, that God defines marriage, the government doesn't, that a woman should have her own bathroom, her own shower, her own locker room, and her own sport, and that it's wrong to kill babies. You we've got about 120 million people that probably subscribe to those basic Christian values in terms of cultural values for Christianity. But yet, do they vote? Well, the same data shows that only about 40%, excuse me, that about 40% of those 120 million won't vote. So we get 60% of them that might Show up to vote, with 40% of them that don't. So you've got tens of millions of Christians that sit on the sidelines and don't exercise their responsibility to just get off their fanny, drive to the local uh ballot uh location, and check a box to preserve the dignity of the women, to preserve the life of children, to preserve our borders so that we're not being infiltrated by gangs and fentanyl and sex trafficking and whatnot. These basic things that we're voting for in this election season will have tens of millions of people that won't bother. And as you know, I'm arguing that the reason that we have fallen into this malaise is I think we bought the lie of the separation of church and state. I really do believe that a lot of people think it that it that the church has no business
The Christian Voting Gap In Numbers
SPEAKER_03in government and the government has no business in church, and that, you know, faith and politics shouldn't mix. And I think that is just uh historical nonsense, and I think it's biblical nonsense. I mean, just go back to the the wall of separation, the Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists, and I know you guys preach this all the time. I would argue, and I think you guys would agree with me, that that letter to the Danbury Baptists said nothing about keeping the church out of the government. It said everything about keeping the government out of the church. Uh Jefferson did not intend to scare these Baptists in Danbury, Connecticut, into thinking that the government was going to tell them to shut up and sit out. That wasn't the point. His point was to tell them to relax, that there's this wall protecting you, the church, you Christians, uh, from any government intrusion. The government has no business in your business. Well, I think the proof of my point as to what Jefferson meant is just go to one of his fellow founding fathers, John Jay. John Jay says, and this is a quote, you all know it, it is the duty as well as the privilege and interest of our Christian nation to select and prefer Christians for their rulers. Close quote, John Jay. And John Adams comes along and he says that without Christian engagement, the American Republic would fail, because he then says our Constitution was made only for moral and religious people and is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. So this in context tells us what Thomas Jefferson was saying about keeping the government out of the church, not the church out of the government, out of the public square, out of civic engagement. It's our responsibility to get involved. And biblically, yeah, I mean, you see, Proverbs, seek the welfare of the city, where I have sent you into exile, and pray that the Lord for on that the Lord on it, the city's behalf, pray for its welfare, because in it you find your welfare. Jeremiah comes along and it says, I urge supplication, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings, and all in high positions. So obviously, Christians are called upon to engage in the public square in civic, in civic um uh issues and respond. And Jesus, I would argue Jesus makes it very clear when he tells us to be salt and light. He doesn't tell us to hide our light under a bushel, he tells us to engage, engage in culture, be salt to a rotting culture and light to a very dark world. Don't withdraw, get into it. So my argument is we have a responsibility to get out and vote today. Yeah. And if we don't, we should be ashamed of ourselves.
Rick GreenYeah, I mean, I I hear so much responsibility is and I and I can't think of any verses that say, hey, just sit around and and do nothing. Um, so much good in there, Dr. Piper. I'm trying to think about which one to talk about first. I I think the most important thing to clarify for all of our, because we are a national
Separation Of Church And State Myth
Rick Greenprogram for all of our listeners in the north. Uh, what is a fanny? I'm kidding, man. We you said get off their fanny, so I was just I was stuck on that. Um well, hopefully we don't have to define that for our audience. No, that's yeah, you are so right, though. And and and I don't know, is it is it because of lack of teaching? We don't catechize, we don't, we don't go through all the responsibilities of a Christian. How did we get so lazy as a as a church? And and and because everything you're saying, I would think we used to teach, right? There used to be a teaching of of you know, pray for the culture you're in, uh be a blessing in the nation where you are. Um, all of those have a have a bit of a burden. You're you're putting some something on the shoulders of the Christian to say, God didn't put you here to sit around on your fanny, if I may. So I mean, what happened? Why did why did we stop? I I agree that the the separates church and state thing, but if you're teaching, like you just said, all of all of these things that the founders said, your conclusion would be obviously Jefferson didn't mean what they've twisted it into, but most people don't know those things.
SPEAKER_03Well, you guys are teaching it. And others, others are teaching it that are following your lead. But I would argue that many, many, many churches don't teach this. And unfortunately, our schools, our public schools, don't teach this. We know that to be a fact. And I would take it even as far as say many of our Christian schools and Christian colleges don't bother to teach.
Rick GreenYeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03We've we've bought the lie. We've bought the lie of separation of church and state that the church has no business getting involved in the public square. We're just supposed to confine our faith to the four walls of the church. It's nonsense. That is not Christianity, and that is not what our founding fathers thought.
Rick GreenBy the way, you mentioned Washington Times. Of course, you have a regular uh um article there or uh uh WashingtonTimes.com. Folks, you can subscribe there. You get that I get it in my email box. Uh, you want to read everything Dr. Piper puts out anyway, but also uh great uh source for your diet of information. It's hard to find good ones out there. Um, Dr. Piper, let me project you past 7 p.m. tonight, whatever the results turn out to be, a lot of different, you know, uh predictions out there. I'm more optimistic than than than most people, but that tends to be my nature anyway. So, but let's just say whatever happens. Everything I heard from you so far today and everything you say in the article, the results tonight don't change my responsibility. I I'm gonna have that responsibility no matter which party's in charge. I'm still supposed to be salt and light and be involved. So I shouldn't be discouraged tonight if you know the leftist and Marxist get a foothold. I I should not be lazy if if we beat them back. Is that is that a proper response?
SPEAKER_03Absolutely. You know, many people I think get fatalistic when it comes to our culture right now. You know, some people are optimistic, as you just described yourself, but I think a lot of people just feel like um we're beaten and um the culture is just a lost. And my response when people ask me that question, if I'm out speaking or whatnot, I always say, look, we've got confidence, we've got confidence that Jesus himself has promised us that the gates of hell will not prevail against his church. We know the end of the story. Jesus isn't going to break his promise. Jesus is the second person of the triune God, and God makes a promise and he keeps it. So when Jesus tells us that the gates of hell will not prevail, we can take that to the bank. We know the end of the story. So what's our responsibility within that particular context in reality? Our responsibility is to do our job and to be bold and courageous, be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord. You know, we're we're told that this is our obligation to run the race, to not give up. All of these various different metaphors and instructions, whether they be Old Testament or New Testament, tell us that we do not have the option as Christians to be lazy and to just be fatalistic and sit back and let culture implode.
Salt And Light Even After Results
SPEAKER_03That is not loving your neighbor as yourself. If you want to love your neighbor, then you ought to care about whether or not their kids are being subjected to sexual indoctrination in the local schools. If you love your neighbor, you ought to care about whether or not the youngest of your neighbors, children that are seconds before they're being born, are being killed by Planned Parenthood. If you want to love your neighbor, you ought to care about thousands of illegals infiltrating Springfield, Ohio and Aurora, Colorado and destroying these communities for African-American citizens and Hispanic American citizens that are there trying to make a living and build up their communities. And then, because of terrible government policy, their communities are destroyed and they don't even feel safe leaving their house. If you want to love your neighbor, as you're obligated to do biblically, then get out and do your job. You cannot sit back and just let culture have its way.
Rick GreenWell, and the argument you made a couple of weeks ago in your article on socialism and and and a need for a Christian revival tells me that again, no matter what happens tonight, even if we beat back the communists from some of these big gains they could potentially make, uh, there is a socialist movement in our country, and we absolutely have to beat it back with a Christian revival. If they do make gains, even more obviously we still need to do that, but even internationally. So, folks, go to go to WashingtonTimes.com. You can look up Dr. Piper there uh and read all of his uh columns from the last few weeks. So on target with exactly what we're facing with this uh not only the election tonight, but what we have coming in the in the coming months and and and years in terms of what we're facing in our country. Author of Not Uh Daycare, the devastating consequences of abandoning the truth. And of course, the one that got me excited about you, the first one I read, was Why I'm a Liberal and Other Conservative Ideas. Dr. Everett Piper. Appreciate you, brother. Thanks so much for coming on today. Yeah, pleasure to join you, Rick. Stay with us, folks. Be right back with David and Tim Barton.
SPEAKER_01Hey guys, this is Tim Barton from WallBuilders. I'm gonna let you know about a special landing page we have on the WallBuilders website. If you go to wallbuilders.com, there is a little box that says WallBuilders is celebrating 250 years of American freedom and independence. Click on that little box and it will take you to the landing page for 250 years of America. And on the landing page, there are several different little boxes you can click on. One of them is for events, it'll let you know of some major events that are that are coming up that are going on that you can actually come and participate in. You can come here, my Dad or I give speeches telling the stories about the birth of the nation, about the founding fathers, the faith connection in America. There's
Rejecting Fatalism With Confidence
SPEAKER_01also a tab for resources that you can click on, and it will take you to lots of different speeches and sermons and documents and proclamations from the founding era. And then there's also a little tab that will take you to the wall builder store with lots of resources, all the things that maybe a hat you want to wear, a shirt to wear, or other wall builders products to read. This is the place to go to celebrate 250 years.
Rick GreenWelcome back to the WallBuilder show. Thanks to Dr. Everett Piper for joining us today. Of course, we have that moral responsibility to vote. Uh, guys, looking forward to the coverage tonight. I have a very, very important question for y'all because I think all three of us are literally physically allergic to wearing ties. Um, and so I'm just trying to figure out y'all usually Show up in coat and tie uh for election coverage. Do I have to wear a tie tonight? Are y'all gonna be wearing a tie tonight? That's the big question. I know. The the fate of the free world is at stake, and all I want to know is whether or not you guys are gonna be in a suit.
SPEAKER_01Well, I Rick, I'm glad at the end you said suit because I thought, you know, Rick, when you wear a coat and tie and slacks, a lot of times that they match, you can just call that a suit and a tie. But um I'm glad you found it there at the end. You know, yeah, we the nature of us traveling Show. And of course, doing stuff in DC and doing stuff at the Capitol at times with the White House. We absolutely uh have to wear suits at times, but it's not our preferred attire. But tonight we will. We are dressing up on occasion because there's a lot of things we want to be able to highlight. And, you know, it's going to be nice to look good when Republicans are are, Lord willing, uh having some victory parties around the nation. But guys, I think one of the things worth pointing out that Dr. Piper again highlighted is our responsibility is not directed by whether or not we win or lose, which is so important. You know, Dad, it's one of the lessons that you have been highlighting from John Quincy Adams for literally decades. Um, going back to his motto that duty is ours, results are gods. Rick, you say this on our program all the time. And for people that have listened with
WallBuilders 250 Years Resources
SPEAKER_01any kind of link, they probably have heard the story of John Quincy Adams and his faithfulness and fighting against slavery when he was a congressman after he'd been president, going back to Congress to do this. They probably know that story, but this was what stuck out to me from Dr. Piper as he was highlighting our responsibility is to be salt and light. And we don't stop being salt and light if we lose, and we don't stop being salt and light and get lazy if we win. We have been given a mandate and we have a stewardship responsibility. And so what happens tonight with a lot of prayer, a lot of work, hopefully there's a lot of positive results across the nation, but regardless, it doesn't change our responsibility as Christians.
Rick GreenYeah, and I think that's the reason we can be so joyful no matter what, right? I mean, we we we're gonna be joyful about this, regardless of which way it goes, because our duty doesn't change. So we go into just saying, hey, what's next?
SPEAKER_01Well, and one of the things too, guys, I I teased this at the beginning. There's one more, uh, there's one more news release over the weekend, and it was, I think it was PBS.
Duty Is Ours Results Are God’s
SPEAKER_01Um, I I said NPR on an interview earlier today. I think it's actually PBS that did this, but they they posted, I think it was over the weekend, maybe it was on Monday, and they said, Hey, just so you know, if if you go to bed tonight and your candidate is winning, or maybe your candidate's losing, don't be surprised if you wake up in the morning and like it's switched. That's normal. Don't think that we need to have election results in on election night. It's normal that it takes a long time. And it just, you know, the the gaslighting they are giving us. When you look at places like Florida, and by like nine o'clock at night, all Florida's results are in, and you know exactly who won what races, and then you have other states, whether up, by the way, generally liberal states, but even Alaska, that's not thought of to be a liberal state when they're like, hey, we're gonna give people like a month and maybe a month plus to get results in. These are things that ultimately we go, you know what, we we should probably correct and change these things. But I am saying this do not fall into the gaslighting that we are seeing from some of these leftist outlets that are saying, guys, it's normal for your candidate to be ahead, and then everybody
Election Night Narratives And Integrity Laws
SPEAKER_01goes to bed, and then there's this, you know, dump of ballots, and there's this huge spike in the night. Like that's normal, guys. It's not normal. Uh, but Dad, you've highlighted there have been a lot of election security laws that have passed over the last year or two that hopefully can help eliminate and remedy some of this nonsense in the future.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, there's been 156 of those laws. So you can vote now with more confidence than we've been able to vote literally in probably a couple decades. And there's also seven ballot initiatives that are in states that are largely blue, but people in the states said, hey, we don't like the way this is going. So those states have an opportunity, seven of them, to vote on ballot initiatives that will tighten up the voting in those states. So even if your legislature is refusing to do voter security, citizens in seven states have said, well, we want to give citizens a choice for that. So there's a lot of important things on the ballot today, not only people you vote for, but also things like those ballot initiatives. And if you're in one of those states, man, vote for ballot security for your state. Good call.
Rick GreenYeah, man, so many important things tonight, folks. Make sure you go to vote. Make sure you're covered and you're watching the coverage tonight. You can do that on Victory Channel and on Flashpoint. Uh watch one of those tonight, and uh you'll get to see us. And uh I think it's gonna be a fun night, guys. I think we're gonna enjoy it. Uh, it's gonna be definitely uh interesting. And we may not, there's some of those races. I think you said this yesterday, David, like Alaska, that we're not gonna know for a while, but uh definitely gonna be a fun night. Make sure you tune in and pray. Everybody pray,
Coverage Tonight And Final Charge
Rick Greeneven beyond the polls closing at seven. Keep praying for what that's gonna mean in Washington, D.C. and across the nation. Uh pray that God's will be done and pray that our Christian voters wake up and stay involved beyond tonight. Thanks for listening. You've been listening to the Well Voter show.
