Columbus Day Returns As Culture Fights Back
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
The news cycle is loud, but not everything happening in America is bad, and we refuse to act like it is. Good News Friday brings you stories that point to real shifts in culture, policy, and public courage, plus a few practical ways you can help us keep moving forward.
We start with a candid request: pray for us. Between now and the election we’re traveling, speaking, doing interviews, and dealing with the same flight delays and disruptions everyone’s feeling. Your prayers matter as much as your financial support, and we’re grateful for both. Then we dig into a headline that surprised us in the best way: Southern Baptist Convention President Willie Rice pushes back hard on the idea that pastors must “stay out of politics.” We talk through why abortion, marriage, gender ideology, and immigration aren’t just political labels but theological issues that shape laws, families, and the nation’s future.
Next, we unpack a big Second Amendment win: the federal government stops enforcing certain registration rules tied to suppressors and short-barreled firearms. We explain the history of the NFA tax stamp, what changes for law-abiding buyers, what does not change (background checks and other legal limits still apply), and why suppressors are more about hearing protection than Hollywood “silencers.”
Finally, we take on Columbus Day, President Trump’s proclamation, and the bigger question underneath it all: how should we judge history without turning every imperfect person into a villain? If you care about faith, freedom, and facts, this conversation is for you. Subscribe, share this episode with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the show.

Prayer Requests During Heavy Travel
SPEAKER_00Actually, Rick, let me add one more thing to uh you were saying at the beginning about people that might want to support us uh along the way. Obviously, yes, please, and thank you. But one of the things that is also worth acknowledging is between now and the election, all of us are doing multiple things a day, whether it be uh radio interviews or podcasts or traveling and speaking literally all over the nation. What would also be super helpful is if people would pray uh for us as we are traveling, as we are going and speaking and doing so much. But traveling's a big deal because uh all of us over the last couple of weeks, really, it's been almost all year, but the last couple of weeks, it is uh increasingly challenging and frustrating with delayed flights, um, with stuff happening that interrupts some of us getting to the events we're going. So something that cannot be overstated is how much we are so grateful for the prayer warriors, the intercessors that are out there that are praying for us as we are going. Obviously, we want you to pray for the nation too, uh, for so much that is going on. But in the midst of the people that are helping financially support us, again, please and thank you for all of that, but also for those that are praying for us along the way. Thank you and please keep it up. Uh, we are gonna be incredibly busy between now and the election and can use all the prayer we can get. Now, I didn't want to derail us. Dad, I know you have some good news ready to go.
SPEAKER_02Well,
Southern Baptists And Politics Debate
SPEAKER_02guys, I am going to start with really kind of a surprising headline for me. I've I've I really like this. Um I I did not necessarily expect it, but I am so pleased because it's happening at a time when common sense demands it. We've already talked about how the Bible demands it, so let me go to the topic so you know what I'm talking about. The headline says Southern Baptist President fires back at calls for pastors to stay out of politics, urges conservative pastors to step up before the midterms because abortion, marriage, gender, and immigration are theological issues. Now, that's just the title of the article. That may be the longest title I've ever seen in an article, but that's the title of the article, and that really sums it up. I'm going to read some of the article. It says Southern Baptist Convention President Willie Rice is absolutely dropping the mother of all bombs on the secular left and their enablers. In a powerful new declaration, Rice is firing back against the absurd un-American demands that pastors must, quote, stay out of politics, end quote. Instead of caving to the wake mob, Rice is urgently calling on Christian leaders across the nation to step up, find their courage, get aggressively involved ahead of the most important midterm elections of our lifetime. In an interview with Fox News, Rice laid out exactly what's at stake. He boldly argues that the radical left's favorite pet projects, abortion and demand, the destruction of traditional merits, the sick gender identity agenda targeting our innocent children, and the lawless open borders immigration crisis, are not merely political disagreements. He says they're deeply theological argues, and they demand a fierce, uncompromising pastoral voice in the public square, and on he goes. I mean, this is just awesome. Finding our voice and talking about, and by the way, Southern Baptists, that's the largest Protestant denomination. They've got 12 million members and about 45,000 churches. He goes on something I love that he points out. He said, you know, decades ago we had voices internally and externally saying, hey, you shouldn't mix religion and politics. But some of those voices came from those who said on the inside, as Baptists, that in order to be faithful to our mission, we need to decouple, divorce ourselves as it were, from some controversial political issues. Now the interesting thing is that those on the theological and political left who said so, they didn't do it, and they had no intention of doing it. In fact, statistics show that people on the political and theological left are actually more politically engaged than those on the right. He's exactly right. And if our folks will get engaged and recognize that nearly every public policy has some type of biblical or theological underpinning, either for or against it, and will vote on that basis, and if they will take if I mean, even remember the fact that in Genesis, when God created institutions, he created the institution of government before he created the institution of the church. And that's his institution, they're all his institutions. There's four jurisdictions, that of the individual, that of the family, that of the government, and that of the church. Those are four jurisdictions, three institutions. The first is the family, Genesis 1, 2, and 3. The second was the government in Genesis 9, and the third was the church in Genesis 28. Those are his institutions. For us to have pulled ourselves out and say, oh, that's secular stuff, he's exactly right. We had theological people decades ago saying, hey, we shouldn't do this biblically, but they didn't stop doing it, and now we're on the outside looking in. We I I think this is one of the best pieces of good news I've heard in a long time, especially coming from a leader with that kind of influence, over 45,000 churches, 12 million that denomination. Man, if they get engaged, we can see the culture war go in a different direction pretty quick.
SPEAKER_01And the contrast is huge, David, because that's been a battle, right, within the Southern Baptist. I mean, that you've had these uh significant fights at the convention over who the president was going to be and and whether or not they were gonna take a position like this. And because of that internal struggle, and because of you know previous presidents not being willing to take that stand, you had a lot of disengagement. So this is a really good, you know, positive piece of uh of good news moving in the right direction. So, Tim, what's your first piece of
ATF Drops Suppressor Registration Enforcement
SPEAKER_01good news?
SPEAKER_00Speaking of moving in the right direction, uh this is one of my favorite pieces of good news. Um, as an outdoorsman, as a firearm lover, the article says federal government to stop enforcing registration rules on suppressors and short barrel firearms. Guys, I I I did not even know who the ATF director was before October 9th. And all of a sudden, this person became someone that I really liked. ATF director Robert, and I might be saying his name wrong. It looks like Cicada. Uh, I don't mean to make him sound like a bug, but uh that's what his name looks like. However, however, what's incredible is for those that don't know, there was a a case where in in January of this year, the Congress changed the $200 tax stamp. Um, that it was a whole game that was being played. Um, where back in 1934, uh for NFA firearms, there was a law imposed that there's a $200 transfer tax to get a suppressor, a short-barreled rifle, short short-barreled shotgun. And so Congress is not allowed to register weapons, but they could register these little tax stamps that you had to buy. And then those tax stamps were then associated with your suppressor or short-barreled rifle or short-barreled shotgun. Uh, in January this year, Congress, it was part of the one big beautiful bill act. They said, Yeah, we're not gonna keep charging people $200 to buy a tax stamp, that we don't do that for any other kind of firearm in this same regard and caliber. It's different from machine guns. I'll come to that in a second. But the the case ultimately was one where a judge said that if it and and let me back up. So there was the lawsuit that was brought, it said if there's not a tax stamp, then then you can't require an additional registry because you can't register the disease anyway. And now if there's not a fee associated, then you you can't continue the registration. Essentially, that's what the judge said. And what the ATF did is they said that even though this case was dealing specifically with uh these individuals that were enjoying part of the lawsuit, we are going to apply this across the board for every American, and therefore every American now doesn't have to go through the tax stamp process to get a suppressor, a short-barreled rifle, or a short-barreled shotgun. Now, here's the reality for those that no pun intended to get really triggered by this. Uh, this is not saying that you now can buy a short-barreled rifle or a suppressor and not have to go through the same standard background checks you would do buying a pistol or rifle or shotgun in general. You just don't now have to wait months upon months for one group in like West Virginia to review the tax stamp for an approval for you to get a suppressor to put on a rifle that you already own. It made no sense at all. It was just an example of the owner's burdensome overreach of a federal government being restrictive with the Second Amendment again, which is what a judge determined. And it's what the ATF director acknowledged, saying, Yeah, we're not gonna keep applying this. Uh, we're gonna let people be able to purchase this just like they would purchase a pistol, a rifle, or shotgun normally. Same process. So you still have to get a background check approval. If you're a felon, you can't legally own these, you can't go purchase them. That there are still some constraints, you have to be the same age you would for everything else that is appropriate for what you're buying. But the great news is that now I don't have to wait for months and months and months if I want to get a suppressor. There's also there was a move known as the Hearing Safety Act that was trying to do the same thing with suppressors for years, saying that these actually are beneficial for people to protect their ears so that when you go hunting, if you don't have time to put your earmuffs on in time before this animal is moving, you got to pull the trigger quickly. We don't want it to damage people's ears. Put a suppressor on. And contrary to what the movies show, a suppressor does not make this thing all of a sudden silent and you can't hear it. Uh, that's not how suppressors actually work. You can go listen to somebody shoot a firearm with a suppressor. It it's it's not all of a sudden this ghost gun that they're invisible and you can't find them now. That's that's not how suppressors actually work. Not to digress too much, guys. The great news is that we now can legally purchase these suppressors just like we could a pistol, where it's it's over the counter, so to speak. You have to do the background check. There's not the waiting period. This is such good news for every American, but for all of us who are outdoors men who are firearms enthusiasts, we have been waiting so long for this moment, and this is yet again one of these victories that the President Trump administration has handed the American people that we have been waiting and praying for for decades. So kudos to Trump, but kudos to ATF director Robert Cicada. Incredible job. And also to clarify, I did mention this, uh he pointed out this doesn't change, like you still have to register a machine gun, um, these like fully automatic weapons, you still have to go through the NFA registration approval and tax requirements. And this article also points out that there are some states where suppressors and short-barreled rifles are illegal, and this doesn't override those state laws. Now, this is also boggling to me that there are states where suppressors are illegal. Uh, guys, there are three states where suppressors are illegal. It's not gonna be really surprising to you what the states are, but what states do you think have made suppressors illegal?
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna guess Massachusetts, California, and maybe Connecticut, but you're gonna tell me it's Alabama, Texas, and Oklahoma, right?
SPEAKER_00No, no, no. Because I I did point out these states are not gonna be real surprises. It is California. Now, California, it's not like crazy surprising, but it's a little surprising because there are a lot of hunters and shooters in California, but also New York and New Jersey. Suppressors are illegal in those states. And again, just like I think in California, where there's a lot of hunters in New York, there's a lot of hunters in New York as well. So the idea that suppressors are illegal there is crazy to me. But at this point, we will take the win for 47 states that suppressors now have removed some of the owner's burdensome restriction of an ATF. There is more freedom for the American people and more hearing protection for those who are outside hunting. Guys, this is great news.
SPEAKER_01I think your pun might have been the best pun ever done on wallbuilders.show that you you know triggered and when we're talking about this subject. Too good. Too good. Um, and and I will add, you know, bro, you're talking about, you know, being outside or hunting or or whatever. Same thing for self-defense. I mean, imagine now if you know you you're woken up, uh, somebody's invaded your home in the middle of the night, you don't have time to put ear protection on. And so even just, you know, after you have fired a shot, to be able to not have that, you know, ringing in your ears or to be deaf for a few seconds or minutes uh while you're still dealing with a situation, God forbid that ever happens to you. But um man, I think this is fantastic for people to be able to get a suppressor and and also have that for for home defense and it make that situation um you you're better able to defend your family in that situation.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, totally agree. And and again, one more thing for those that maybe are not as familiar with these, you can look it up and you can review the decibel rating. Uh suppressor, all it does is it reduces the volume of that shot to where, usually speaking, it is not going to be permanently damaging for your ears. Um, now I say usually speaking, depending on where you are, where your ear is, like if the gun goes off, whatever. But but that's what suppressors were made to reduce and remove permanent damage from people's ears. But I say this because, you know, Rick, to your point, if this was a self-defense scenario, it's not like somebody's in the next room firing off their AR-15 with a suppressor, and I have no idea what's happening because it's a suppressor. No, this is gonna be a loud exchange. You're gonna know shots were fired, but it will not damage your ears in the course of this. But hopefully you uh have eradicated the threat, maybe with inflicting damage on the bad guy, but at least it will not be your ears, which is kind of this point if you're using a suppressor in a home defense scenario. So, again, this is not eradicate all of the noise, but it does hopefully prevent long-term damage to your ears because it does make the shots hearing safe, even though it still is loud.
SPEAKER_02And Tim, I I gotta jump on that because you were the first one in our family to start using suppressor zone guns.
SPEAKER_00Allegedly. Allegedly. Let me just clarify after that boating accident, it's real sad that all my guns have fallen to the bottom of the lake and suppressor, so nobody knows what I do and don't have anymore.
SPEAKER_02So, so with those uh those suppressors you used to have, I remember the first time I went out and shot, and you shot, I said, that's not a silencer. That's that's loud. And I called them silencers, and you just pointed out, look, it just drops the decibels by 30, 40 points, whatever it is. And it's still like being inside a stadium in the middle of a football game. It's it's still loud, but it does not pierce your ears and cause that numbing deafness that goes when you really get something sharp. And I've got to say, man, suppressors, silencers, it's not what they were cut out to be. I watched too many gangster movies, I guess, growing up, and I thought they were silent, and they're not. Not by a long shot. You're exactly right, Tim.

Columbus Day And Historical Context
SPEAKER_02I love the fact that Trump is just, he's so unwoke, he doesn't care what's woke. If it's true and he can find basis for it, he's gonna do it. And this most recent one is he's bringing back Columbus Day. He issued a proclamation for Columbus Day, moved a big 13-foot statue of Columbus into the White House, uh, doing all this great stuff. We went to Union Station and rescued the statue of Columbus that had so much graffiti on it. And it's it's just amazing historically. Columbus and Christ are the two most celebrated figures in the world. Uh, they're the two figures that have the most statues of them, Jesus Christ and Christopher Columbus. Think about that. The top two statue folks in the world. And how did we go from having 600 statues of Columbus to, in a matter of two years, he's the greatest villain and the hero of the world?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and Dad, to clarify, uh he he at least was at one point one of the most celebrated, because he's not today, but to your point, the fact that there were 600 statues of him erected around the world, this was a worldwide celebrated individual for his courage, his bravery, his navigational ability, things that today he's not credited with, and he's actually slanted and slided. But again, even though he's not the most celebrated person today, he used to be one of the most celebrated. That's why there are statues everywhere.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and Columbus, I mean, it's so weird because in taking down Columbus Day, they wanted to call it Indigenous People Day. Okay. Are are you talking about the Tainos or the Cannibs? Because the cannibals were where we get the word cannibal. Uh so is is that the indigenous people we're celebrating? Or could it be the Tainos who really loved Columbus? He loved them, they had great relationships. So when you say Indigenous People Day, I I mean, are you making a distinction? Or are you just saying that if you're an indigenous person, you were actually good? And that's just absolutely not the case. So many of the native tribes fought each other, and some were good and some weren't. And and and so it's like no discrimination in history at all. They're not looking to see, they're just reacting. And so not only did Trump bring back Columbus and the statue, et cetera, uh, he was just talking about all the great things that happened as a result of that. And and the fact that we have, again, 600 statues to Columbus, he is a guy who literally changed the face of the Western world. No question about it, what he did. And so just reading Trump's proclamation about Columbus, you can get at the White House site, see the proclamation he did, the good things Columbus did that we just hardly don't cover in school anymore. It's really worth doing. And the fact that he's bringing him back as a hero as he used to be is just kind of reinstating some of that dumb stuff that was taken down with with all the backlash during the COVID period.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, man, it wasn't uh just Columbus, so many that had been had been canceled that that he brought back. Tim, I was trying to remember when you went to the uh what do they call the uh Patriot Park or you know, where he pulled in all these statues, the Caesar Rodney statue that is in the basement. Yeah, Freedom Plaza. So, I mean, you got to see a lot, and you did some great videos of a lot of these statues that had been canceled, heroes that had been canceled, and Trump's been so bold to say, hey, we're bringing these guys back. These are these are heroes in American history, as you've said many times. Of course they were all flawed, of course they were sinners just like us, uh, but that doesn't mean we should cancel them. We need to be celebrating them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's exactly right. One of the things that is is again worth highlighting is the reality that Columbus was not a perfect person shouldn't surprise anybody. Jesus came and died on the cross for our sins because the Bible tells us Romans 3, there's none righteous, no, not one, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. That like this is basic Bible, it's basic truth. But the reason Columbus had over 600 statues erected in his honor, it's not because anybody was ever Confused and thought he was perfect. It's because they acknowledged what he did was so remarkable. And when people look to him today and and they accuse him of genociding the natives, which is not true, they accuse him of all of this racist slave propaganda stuff. They also are divorcing a lot of the context from the actual events that happened. The fact that Columbus is in the 1400s when this is much going on, it's the era of conquest. He's arriving in places where there's literally conflict between native tribes that are there. At times, that conflict uh spills over his men. He actually tells the king and queen at a time that some of the men that were going with them on these voyages were not befitting the name Christian. Some of the men that are with them actually do some heinous things. I think it was on his third voyage when he actually ends up executing some of the Spaniards, Spaniards for their bad behavior against the natives. All of this again, just context. It's not that Columbus was a perfect guy, and he also was certainly a sinner. That's an easy acknowledgement. But also remembering the context of the time, it's an era of conquest. And when people even talk about some of the slave con uh the slave situation surrounding Columbus, I would point out when Columbus goes to war with with some of these native tribes at times, and and Columbus's men win, by the way, they were often joined by other native allies against some of these native tribes that were really barbaric against some of the other natives. So there were natives warring against each other. Columbus goes to war against some of the natives, and uh other natives who had been singled out by these individuals joined Columbus. Not to digress too much, I want to point out that when Columbus's men defeat these natives in conflict in the 1400s, there's really only two options if you've been captured at the end of a war, and it's either you are enslaved or you are executed. That's kind of the way it is. So people look at Columbus and go, Oh my gosh, like we can't believe he had slaves. Okay, name any kind of leader, literally, name a political or military leader in the 1400s that went to war and conflict and didn't take slaves at the end of it. And this is not a justification of Columbus. Again, it's the acknowledgement of the context of the time. And again, this is not to say Columbus wasn't a sinner, but a lot of the accusations that are being lobbed at Columbus come from a place of chronological snobbery that because things are different now, we look back and go, well, he was uniquely evil for what he did. No, he was he was the normal kind of evil because it was the same evil everybody else was doing. And yet, in the midst of that, he was still someone that sought to be used by God, who acknowledged that God was leading him, the Holy Spirit was leading him. And Dad, even as you're talking about this, like the next two articles in my stack literally are dealing with Columbus. One of them that uh the the highlight of this article, a guy named Brett Rugo uh is somebody from Italy who's bringing a one-of-a-kind 19th-century statue of Christopher Columbus from Italy for Trump that Trump's gonna put up in the Rose Garden. Uh, there's another article by the Epoch Times that goes through some of what's there. But I would even acknowledge I I posted several videos on my social media, on Wallbrother social media on Columbus Day earlier this week. And I mean, people lost their ever-loving minds over Columbus. How dare you say that he was a good guy, et cetera, et cetera. And I would just say we need to be careful that we don't get triggered by by acknowledging that we should celebrate how God used somebody and the great accomplishments that God did through them when somebody says, Yeah, but they weren't perfect, therefore cancel them. The reason that Caesar Rodney had a statue of him riding a horse is not because somebody thought he was perfect, it's because they recognized when he had cancer, phase cancer, he makes this incredible midnight ride to get there in time to cast a deciding vote for independence, which ultimately helps lead to America becoming a nation. The reason we honored these guys was because of the courage and the sacrifice, the way that God used them in special moments. It wasn't overlooking their flaws, their sins, and their failures. So even why where we look at Columbus, I am so grateful that President Trump is able to look at some of these guys and say, you know what? We're not gonna just cancel all these guys. We're gonna celebrate some of the great men who have done incredible things. And I am so grateful that's what he's done with Christopher Columbus.
SPEAKER_02And Tim, I'm gonna add one more thing that because Cesar Rodney did own slaves, but it's interesting, it is death, he freed him, and he set up a schedule to free all the slaves he had, and he passed an anti-slavery law in his state. So you can remember him for what he did or for how he ended up and changed the whole state as a result. And that's what you're saying about keeping the whole context in picture, and it's the same with Cesar Rodney, just like Christopher Columbus.
Final Wrap Up And Weekend Sendoff
SPEAKER_01Well, thanks for all the good news, guys. Everybody have a fantastic weekend. Thanks so much for listening to the Wall Booter Show.
