Rick Green [00:00:07] Welcome to the intersection of faith and culture. It's The WallBuilders Show. And today we're jumping right back in with David Barton, speaking at the Pro-family Legislator Conference.

David Barton [00:00:15] Congress declared war and you have FDR talking to Congress. And so we declare war on faith. Now, as it turns out, Japan has a treaty with Germany, and Germany and Japan have a treaty that either one is attacked by another nation, that the other nation will go to their aid. So once we declare war on Japan, then Germany and Italy, Hitler and Mussolini, they declare war on the United States. And once they declare war on us, we turn right back around, declare war on them. So what happens is over a period of four days, there have been six declarations of war. We're clearly at war. The problem we have is we were not prepared for work. We believed what Woodrow Wilson had said at the end of World War One, that World War One is the war to end all wars. And we believed that if we were not a threat to anyone, everyone would leave us alone. So at the time World War Two broke out, we were still literally flying World War one biplanes. That was what we had for our arsenal was World War One, Bob. We're still using World War One tanks. Literally, when we were doing training in the military, they would take a panel truck and put a pipe on the front of it, and they would practice that as if it were a tank because they got a pipe sticking out the front. They took broomsticks and painted them black. And that's what they used for rifles when they were trying to infantry. We had no weapons because if we're not strong and if we're not if we're not powerful, we won't threaten anybody and everybody will leave us alone. Well, that didn't work well, as we saw. So what happens is we have to. But from the time that we got attacked by Japan, it was 11 months before we attacked anybody else. Now, we had we said there is 11 months before we attacked Hitler. We tried to do some things in Japan. We had the do little raid and we sent guys and you just kind of let Japan know, We'll see you guys later. But we want you to know we're paying attention. And so we had to do little raids, some things like the battle midway. But over on the German side, it was 11 months before we stepped in Europe because we had nothing to step in Europe with. So suddenly we start mobilized and we start turning out Sherman tanks at a rapid rate. Now, this is good because we're still using World war tanks, but Sherman tanks aren't that good In the war of the top 12 tanks in World War Two, the Sherman tank was rated number eight out of 12. Every German tank is better that the Panzers, the Tigers. So we're not even on the same battlefield, but at least we've got something to go to war with. We started turning into B-24 Liberator every 55 minutes off the assembly line, if you can imagine. Every 55 minutes. Return now to a B-24 bomber. And we turned out a liberty ship every four days out of the harbor when we got going. It was absolutely phenomenal what America did once we got going, but it took us 11 months. So after 11 months of turning out planes every 55 minutes a ship every four days. We're now headed for Germany. And so what happens in November 1942, it's called Operation Torch. We came ashore in North Africa because there's less troops there. There's a still German held Nazi held territory. But it's not like landing in mainland Europe where all the all the troops are. We landed in North Africa where there's a lot less troops than we could fight our way across. And Patton is the one who brought them ashore. There were three task force. The only purely American task force was led by Patton. And so as they unload and start moving across northern Africa, this is where we have a lot of failures. Battle of Kasserine Pass a tank battle. Rommel just whipped the Dickens out of the Americans. And that's where Eisenhower said, Patton, why don't you go try tanks and see how that works? And so Patton goes in and whips Rommel. And so that's where Patton really has standing rise as a patent just doesn't lose battles. And so we go across North Africa, we go into Sicily, we go up through Italy, patents lead in all these forces and just kick and tell everywhere. And so what happens is we're now ready for D-Day because we've been able to push the Germans back out of North Africa. We're taking Italy from Mussolini. We're now ready to go up into the mainland. And so we now need to get ready for D-Day. We're going to land on the European mainland. And so Operation and D-Day, it's called Operation Fortitude. And so Peyton is in charge of Operation Fortitude and he is stationed at Dover. Now, you see Dover right across from Calais. You see Dover, England, England, the white country. And you have over Belgium, France, the purple countries as 23 miles from Dover over to Calais. And so this is where we're getting ready to do D-Day. And at this point in time, the Germans know the pattern is the guy. Wherever Patton goes, you keep your eye on him because he's kicking our tail everywhere. So Patton gets over there, he starts building up forces, and it's a massive buildup. Every little farmhouse and the country becomes a staging area for tanks and trucks. And and the German planes fly on reconnaissance over it. See, all all these farms are filled with Sherman tanks and filled with jeeps and filled with. And it's all a lie. Literally. It's all allied. These were the tanks that we had. They were all they were inflatables where we used inflatable tanks. As a matter of fact, here's the jeeps we had. When we go to the air, this is one of our fake bombers, but it looked like a bomber from the air. It will not get off the ground has made mainly apply wooden balloon stuff. This is what the fighters looked like from the air as the Germans flew over them would have. Feels full of fighters out there. And then hears the troop barge, as they saw. Except these troop barges were made out of plywood. And basically, if you walked on them, they would sink. But it looks good in the harbor. So what we would do is we would take a whole bunch of troops and move them around between places and just shift them around. So it looks like we're just busy bees over here just doing all this stuff. And when D-Day finally comes, what has happened is Hitler. He's got nearly 800 miles of troops along along the coast there on the north side. And he pulls half of the troops out to put them over at Calais because that's where patents come in and patents the guy. We were scared of the most. So when D-Day does happen, it has absolutely nothing to do with Patton. 446 miles away, we land on the beaches of Normandy. And so the Germans had pulled half their troops out waiting on Patton. And so even though we lost 3000 Americans that day, it's not near what we would have lost if a patent not pulled them out. And even after they pulled him out, when Hitler's generals were asking, let us send troops to Normandy, he said, no, it's all a fake. Norman is a fake patent is the guy, Pat. And so he kept his troops there and is so very effective. Patton was very effective at that. So after we land all the troops on D-Day, they fly Patton over to the landing areas and he takes control of the Third Army. And at this point in time with the third Army, what we're going to do is we're going to create a front. We've landed in Normandy. And now what we're going to do is is start driving the Germans back into Germany. So we create a 600 mile long front up in the northern part of that yellow box that General Courtney Hodges with the first Army. And the bottom half of that yellow box is this General Patton with the Third Army. And so as we're starting to push the Germans back in, they recognize that if this is successful, we're done. We can't let this happen. We can't. We've got to break the line. So they choose a point on the high mountains up in the far north. And this is where they did a blitzkrieg attack. And blitzkrieg is a German word for lightning strike. And they took 1800 German tanks, 200,000 Germans, and they hit one narrow point and Courtney Hodges line. And it was the point where he had his guys doing the most rest. If you've been battle fatigued, we're going to put you up in the high mountains because nothing's going to happen up there. And that's exactly where the German came through. So the Germans came through with a force that went through Courtney Hodges line. They got 80 miles on the other side of it and turned back around and started attacking him from both directions. So he's now frozen. He can't move because he's got 200,000 guys behind him. He's got the German army in front of him. And this is what the Battle of the Bulge is. And this is where the battle bulge goes for the next five weeks. This is how they spent Christmas and December of 1844. Patton had seen this coming. His intelligence guys said Courtney Hodge is about to get hit up there. And so he started telling his guys, get ready to move the Army north because we're going to have to go save him. Eisenhower called. Patton said, Hey, you need to get up there and help Hodges because he's stuck right now. You've got to help them defeat the Germans. And so Patent understands that, and they start to move in that direction. Now, at this time, Patton is very frustrated because this this time of year in Europe is very rainy, very wet, and it lasts that way for weeks because we did not have great tanks. The way we defeated the German tanks was we put P-51 Mustang planes and P 47 thunderbolts in the air and our planes took out their tanks. And that left our tanks to be free to take out mortars, machine guns and bazookas and other stuff, which is a good match for us. So we didn't go tank on tank much at all. We put the planes up, but he's gone now six weeks without being able to get a plane in the air. And as a result, the German tanks are doing a lot of devastation. His forces and he's losing guys that he doesn't think he should be losing. If we get those planes up, we said at that point we essentially had wiped out 90% of the German air force. So we're not scared of the German air force, but we are of their tanks and we can't knock their tanks out. So he calls in General James O'Neil, who's the chief of chaplains in the third Army, said O'Neil. He says, Have you got a prayer for weather? And O'Neil said, I'll check, sir. And he came back to them and he said, I've checked the prayer books. I can't find a prayer for weather. He said, I'll write you one. And he said, Patton turned his back on him and went over to the window where it was just pouring down rain, looked at the one that had his hands behind his back. And he says, O'Neil, he said, Do our soldiers pray? And O'Neil said, Yeah, that's why we have chaplains. We have service. He said, I'm not asking you. The chaplains were. I said, Do our soldiers pray? He said, Well, there's no atheists in foxhole. Yeah, they know. He said, I've got 250,000 men. I want to know, is every single one of them praying about the rain right now? And so what happened was this is where he came up with the prayer card. Now this prayer card and the originals right down there is signed by Patton on the back side. By the way, this is how they spent Christmas of 1844. And you see the holly leaves on the side. This is the Christmas greeting. We're in the middle of the Battle of the Bulge. You sent or just starting the Battle of the Bulge. And so this is a Christmas greeting. But on the other side, this is where you find the prayer that was prayed. It's a great prayer, Almighty must Marshall Father, we humbly beseech the of that great goodness to restrain these immoderate rays with which we've had to contend. Grannis Fairweather for battle, graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call upon their that armed with that power, we may advance from victory to victory and crush the opposition and wickedness of our enemies and establish sight justice among men of nations. Amen. So this is what he wants. Passed out to all 250,000 guys. He wants them. Trying this. At the same time he's moving toward Bastogne or toward Luxembourg, which is going to be his headquarters for the Battle Bastogne, Battle of the Bulge. So as he's moving forward, it's interesting. Most people don't know that Patton was really a church guy's course as he was a rough and tough as he was. He actually taught Sunday School for Kids. So he's a Sunday school teacher and church. And this was this was Peyton. And what Peyton had done as a god fearing guy is they were moving across Europe, pushing the Germans back and back. He would stop at churches. And the churches over in Europe tend to be what we would call high churches. America's mostly a low church country. The high church would be like Catholic and Anglican and Episcopal, and there's a lot of visual stuff there. Just majestic cathedrals, awesome stuff, all inspiring when you walk in there. Statues of Jesus and statues of the apostles and statues of saints and just it's all visually appealing. And as so many churches in America, you know, pretty simple, may have a nice looking place, but it's pretty simple. But in Europe, it was high churches. And so what Patton would do is he would defeat enemy from town to town. He would stop by the churches and he would walk into the churches. And the churches always had a statue of Jesus somewhere in the church. And he would walk up to the statue, Jesus, take his helmet off, put it under his arm and stand there and look up at Jesus and give a battle report of what was happening. You say last week would defeat the enemy over here and we really get some good over here, he said. Now, next week I'm going to be over here and I really need your help over here. And he would he would brief Jesus like he was brief and Eisenhower would just just talk to him. And then he'd go out and go on in the next place and after the next battle and go on and brief Jesus. And so when he got to Luxembourg, he found a church in Luxembourg, and he went to the church in Luxembourg. And when he went inside, his conversation with Jesus was so profound that his officers recorded it all. It was different from all the other conversations they recorded all they wrote it down. After the battle bulge was over, they went to him, said, Sir, this be recorded. You said This is what you said. He said, Yeah, that's what I said. We actually have that over here. It came out in 1947 and with it they had it was a story on how general patents battle prior to turn The Battle of the Bulge was revealed. And this is this is what they painted as a result of what they had seen in there is patent goes steps. Jesus puts the helmet on his hand and starts talking to Jesus. Now I've edited the prayer to get all the profanity out because he was cussing Good. He was really ticked off, you know, says, What's the weather deal here? Why can I get any help on the weather? And so he lets it goes up. Ed But here's this prayer and this is what they wrote down. Sir, I am talking to Jesus, sir. I can't help but feel that I've offended you in some way that suddenly you've lost all sympathy with our cause that you're throwing in with bon rum. Staten is paper hanging God and paper hanging God was Hitler. Hitler was the deity for them. And he was a paper hanger. He hung wallpaper before the war. So he's, you know, this is impeccable paper hanging God of theirs said, Looks like you're throwing him with them. He said, You know, without me telling you that our situation is desperate. Sure, I can tell my staff that everything is going according to plan, but there's no use me telling you that our 101st Airborne is holding out against tremendous odds in Boston and that without your cooperation from a weather standpoint, I'm deprived of an accurate disposition of the German armies. And how can I be intelligent? My attack, he said All this probably sounds unreasonable to you, but I have lost all patients with your chaplains because the chaplains kept saying, Sir, this is everywhere. You just got to be patient with This is the way every winter is here in Europe. And he said, I've lost all patience with your chaplain to insist that this is a typical, arduous winter, and I must have faith. He said, You just got to make up your mind whose side you're on. He said, You must come to my assistance so that I may dispatch the entire German army as a birthday present. Your Prince of Peace. So. Is hilarious. He told Jesus, he says, If you'll give me four days of good weather, I'll send you so many Germans. Your bookkeepers in heaven won't be able to keep up with all the ones I.

Rick Green [00:13:53] Alright folks. Quick break. We'll be right back. You're listening to The WallBuilders Show.

Rick Green [00:15:03] Welcome back to the wall. WallBuilders show jumpingup at right back and with David Barton speaking at the Pro-family legislators conference.

David Barton [00:15:08] So he has this prayer. They distribute the prayer card. 250,000 soldiers start praying the prayer for the weather to chain restrain these winds. And I have the after Army action report over here for the third Army. And it has all the weather reports and all the allies. You've got all the allies that the Canadian weather reports and the British weather reports, America. And they all use the term miracle for six days in a row. The weather forecast says bad skies. It's a miracle, as you completely clear. As for six days, they had clear skies. He asked for four, he got six. And so they get the planes in the air. They wipe out the German tanks, they turn the battle. And so that's that's what happened. So as they were leaving town, Peyton, stop back by the church. He went in helmet hand, went to Jesus and apologized for the way he had acted before. It's like, okay, you really had this under control. My bad. But it was a significant turning time. And it's one of the many times that we just never hear about anymore. And again, we've got the documentation over there. So when you look at a at the answer prayers, you look at the prayers across time, you look at all right, so you have George Washington with answered prayers not just one time, but many. I gave you one example. You have Lincoln the same way, particularly the key enterprise in the middle of the Civil War, everything turned. And then you have the stuff with patent. So what lessons can be learned from answered prayers? Well, there are several. The first thing is the fighting didn't stop. When God answered the prayer, it just increased and got more intense. How many battles did Lincoln win? After that, prayer was answered? I mean, how many battles had Lincoln fight every year? How many battles in Washington to fight? After God answered this prayer in 1777. How many more battles did patent fight after God answer this Battle of the Bulge? Answered Prayer didn't change anything except win that battle so that you can go on and fight a whole bunch more other battles. It was not a resting time. It was not a time. We won the election. So what if. So what? I mean, if you'll notice, these guys doubled down. Not they didn't slow down. They went to four. They went forth a lot of aggression. So once God answers the prayers, you go on the offense and attack. And actually, once God answers prayers, you really double down on your efforts. And that's what you see historically answered. Prayer is not the end of the story. It's the start of a story. And that's where things start and you go on the battle. So when you look at what happened with with election night, Republicans won the presidency and we control the Senate and we get the House. Question is what now? Now, I want to give you a history on this for a little bit. I want to go back over the last 102 years of the presidency over the last two years. The presidents say there are times when we have split Congresses. That is, you don't have a trifecta trifecta to present. The House and the Senate are all the same party. So you have split powers and that's we're going to call that split Congress. Then there's other times when you have the same party unified Congress, and that's that that trifecta. That's when the president, House and Senate are all together. So over the last 102 years, when you look at split, Congress is as split. Congress could be. Democrats have the Senate and Republicans have the House. So the other way around, or it could even be the presence of one party in both the House and Senate over different party, whatever it is. But when you look over that, the last 102 years with split Congresses, there's been 46 years of 102 years when you did not have that trifecta that there's nearly half the time the president was hamstrung or Congress too hamstrung or whatever. Then if you look at the trifecta years over the past two years of trifecta, and that's when, you know, the Republican House, the Senate and the president are all in the same or Democrat House or Senate and Democrat president all the same. Over the past hundred and two years, the trifecta has been 56 years. So about half the time you have an opportunity to advance. About half the time you're fighting uphill. So over the past two years, there have been nine Republican presidents, there have been eight Democrat presidents. And look at the tri factors they've had. So almost all the Democrats. First, let's go back to FDR. When FDR was president, his first term for four years, he had a House and a Senate that was of the Democrat Party. In his second term, he had four years of a House and Senate and the Democrat Party. In his third term, he had four years of House and Senate Democrat Party. In his fourth term, he died shortly into his first fourth term. It wasn't long at all, but he has 12 years of a unified party. Democrats could do everything they wanted to. The next president was Harry Truman. His vice president took over. So Harry Truman goes in and Harry Truman has two years of a House and Senate of his party. He misses two years. Republicans have, I think, the Senate for two years. And then you'll find that Harry Truman has four years. So that, you know, it's a pretty good period time just when those two presidents are having a unified party. Then when JFK comes into office and JFK has two years of unified party, House, Senate and president, and then he's assassinated. And so LBJ walks in and he has the other two years of JFK's term. And in those two years, he has the House and Senate and the presidency. And his next term, he has the House and Senate in the presidency. Then Jimmy Carter becomes the next Democrat president and he has four years of the House and Senate along with his presidency. Then you have Bill Clinton, who comes in his first term. He had two years of unified party and he had none in the second. So there were six years Republicans had part of Congress at that point in time. Then Barack Obama becomes the next Democrat president. His first term. He has four years and a second term. He has two years. So six out of eight years, he has a unified party to be able to move forward. And then Biden, this most recent Democrat president, he had two years and the last two years was split because of the House going to the Republicans. Now, change over to the Republican side for a minute. Go back to Calvin Coolidge. Calvin Coolidge became president and midterm Harding had died. And so he steps in as Peraza as a coup, has had two years of having a Republican House of Senate along with him. And this next term, he had a full four years. So he had six years of 8 or 6 years out of Harding that but we started with Coolidge. Then if you go to Herbert Hoover, Herbert Hoover had two years, half of his term as a Republican president, He was able to move forward agendas. When you go to Eisenhower, Eisenhower had two years and his first term had zero years in the second term. So he had two out of out of eight years where he had a unified control of Capitol Hill. When you got Richard Nixon in his first term, he had four years. In his second term, he had zero excuse me, first term he had zero. Your second term had zero years. But then he resigns after one year. And so that's when Gerald Ford steps in for the last three years. And Gerald Ford had three years without any kind of help in the House or Senate. Then Ronald Reagan becomes our next president and his first term. He has zero years with House and Senate. Second term. He has zero years with House and Senate. Then you have George H.W. Bush who goes in. He has zero years with the House and Senate. And then when George W Bush goes in in his first term, he has two years. In his second term, he has two years. Then President Trump and his first term had two years. And now in his second term, he's going to have two years and we'll see what the next two after that bring. So over the past 102 years, what you're looking at is when you look at a trifecta, Democrats have had a trifecta for 40 years and Republicans had it for 16 years. Republicans don't get much choice or chance to be able to make progress, which is another reason you double down after you get an answer prayer because you don't get that many shots at it. So you take the time. You have to make the progress you can make and maybe you get another shot for having done that progress. And that's the best, best thing you can say from history. So. When God answers prayers, God doesn't answer prayer. No question about it. We look at three examples. There's a thousand examples. But once God answers prayers, then you go on the offense and attack. If I can remind you of Proverbs 2122, Proverbs 2122 says A wise man attacks the city of the mighty and tariffs down the stronghold which they trust. Notice what a wise man does. A wise man attacks the strongholds. He doesn't go for low hanging fruit. He goes for the hard stuff. He goes for the big things. And now you do the low hanging fruit, too. We know little by little, Scripture says you don't want to all want to rob me. 722 And Exodus 29 are access 23 versus 2930 You go little by little, but you still go for the big stuff. It's been offensive minded. And if I can go back to the movie Princess Bride, you know, it's have fun storming the castle. You know that. That's a great line. Have fun storming the castle. Now I'm going to throw one of the thought out to you, because this is going to be something we're going to talk about throughout the conference. State and federal, having done a lot of legislative work for a good bit of time. It's very common that people say, man, don't even introduce that because there's no way it gets passed the courts or courts or striking down. We're just wasting our time to introduce that. And that was true for a number of years. That's no longer true right now. Right now, we're finding all sorts of judges that are saying, hey, there's only 17 enumerated powers in the Constitution. Some say 18. I count 17 clauses. There's 18 things the federal government is allowed to do in the Constitution. Everything else belongs to the states. That's the ninth and 10th Amendment. And so what's been happening is the federal courts are saying, no, no, no, the feds. Not that that actually is a state power. And so what's happening is we're wanting a lot of lawsuits where that laws have been passed by the states that ten years ago 100% would have been struck down. And now the courts are saying now the federal government's actually got it and outside of its box, it needs to be put back in the box. And so we're going to talk about this even with immigration tomorrow. And I'll show you that with immigration for the first hundred years. It was a shared responsibility between states and the feds. It's become a total federal response built in the last century. But now courts are starting to say, like Texas, it's okay for Texas to do immigration stuff, even though they're supposed to be a federal responsibility as part of the Constitution. And everybody takes an oath to uphold the Constitution so states can uphold as well as the federal government. And if the feds won't do it, let the states do it. So we're getting decisions like that. So I say that that is worth rethinking in your caucus is what we decide to move forward with. Because you used to be, hey, there's no chance of getting that passed the courts. Let's not waste our time. That's no longer the situation. Doesn't mean it will get past the courts, but it does mean that we're winning more cases now. Restructuring federalism back to a good position in the States than we've had in the last 30 years. I mean, the last 2 to 3 years, we've won a number of cases. And we're going to talk about some of that as we go forward. So all this to say there's a lot of offensive mindedness that needs to go forward. But I'll remind you, using a statement from Ronald Reagan, along with the picture of Teddy Roosevelt, Republican president, I didn't include him because he wasn't in the last hundred and two years, but to use that phrase would with Ronald Reagan's statement, just remember to be a happy warrior. And that's the epitome of the happy warrior right there. So be offensive, be aggressive, but be civil and what you do. But absolutely, this is not a time to slow down. Enjoy the answered prayer. But you see from history, that's when you double down and start going after you much harder.
